For the past three decades, Rose Hartman has photographed the rich, the famous and the stylish in some of the most legendary settings of New York nightlife, from Studio 54 to the Metropolitan Museum’s Costume Institute Gala.

 

Her arresting pictures, that manage to create the illusion of intimacy in the most public circumstances, have been published in countless international publications, including Vogue, Stern, Harper's Bazaar, Vanity Fair, Panorama, the NY Times, New York, Stern, Amici, Allure and Art & Auction.

 

Her first book, “BIRDS OF PARADISE” (Delacorte Press, 1980) offered a private and extraordinary look into the world of fashion and its personalities, from a visit to Ralph Lauren’s studio to the glamorous and intimate fashion shows that Halston organized in his Olympic Tower showroom.

 

ACC, a London/New York-based publishing group, published her second photography book, “INCOMPARABLE WOMEN of STYLE" in the fall of 2012. In March, 2015, ACC published her third book, "INCOMPARABLE COUPLES".

 

Her images have been widely exhibited in some of the most prestigious museums and galleries of the United States, including the Museum of the City of N.Y., Pucci Gallery, Dia, Experience Music Project, Sorokko Gallery, the Whitney Museum, Dean Project, the Vincent Astor Gallery at Lincoln Center, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Staley-Wise gallery in Soho.

 

In November 2011, Hartman had a solo exhibit, “Incomparable Women of Style” at the Fashion Institute of Technology; in November 2012, the Ravestijn Gallery in Amsterdam showcased her signature images. In January 2013, a solo exhibit was held in Punta del Este, Uruguay.

 

Omar's, a members only dining club, has acquired and is currently showing a selection of her most famous images, including Carolina Herrera, Mick Jagger, and Andy Warhol and Jerry Hall holding a lively conversation in Studio 54.

 

Hartman's photos are in the collections of Saks Fifth Avenue, the Patterson Museum, Ralph Rucci, Jerry Hall, Jane Holzer, Bianca Jagger, Patrick McMullan, Mary McFadden, Jean Shafiroff, and Paul Wilmot.

 

Using powerpoint, Hartman has presented her legendary images in N.Y. at the New School for Social Research, the School of Visual Arts, Soho House, Chiat-Day Advertising Agency, and the Fashion Institute of Technology.

 

Hartman's images of Halston were included in a groundbreaking exhibit, "Halston & Warhol: Silver & Suede" at the Andy Warhol Museum in May 2014, as well as a hardcover book.

 

A documentary film, The Incomparable Rose Hartman, produced by the Artists Company, showcases her life and career.
